Iran Closes Hormuz. Oil Does What Oil Does.

State media announces the closure after strikes on Lebanon. The most telegraphed escalation in modern energy markets arrives anyway.

Iranian state media says the strait is closed in response to Israeli strikes. Tanker seizure headlines are back, threats are flying ahead of talks, and the energy market is once again pricing the only chokepoint that has never been allowed to fully fail.

Everyone knew this could happen. It was the most gamed-out scenario in commodities, the subject of a thousand bank research notes. And the market still was not positioned for it, because the lesson of forty years of Hormuz scares was that it never actually closes. The tails you stop hedging are the tails that get you.

The tails you stop hedging are the tails that get you.

Our practical read for the audience: first, direct exposure is the obvious trade and therefore the crowded one. Second, the durable winners of chokepoint crises historically are not the oil majors, they are the owners of alternative logistics: pipelines, storage, non-Gulf barrels, tankers positioned on the right side of the strait. Third, and we cannot stress this enough, do not day-trade a war. The people with better information than you are not posting it on X.
